2016 has been a year fraught with death, sadness, and insanity, even if we’re just talking about what we saw on TV. Through it all, the laughter has never died. As proof, here are a whole bunch of TV moments that made us laugh this year.
This is not a list of the funniest things that happened on TV in 2016, since that would be really difficult and polarizing to compile. This is just a list of things that made us laugh really hard in 2016, and hopefully it will bring you as much joy as it brings … read more
Let’s talk true crime. Society’s unwavering obsession with understanding, dissecting and chronicling each and every detail behind humanity’s most reprehensible acts is certainly nothing new. And lucky for pop culture fanatics, the genre has undoubtedly become stitched into the very fabric of the entertainment word. And while some would say doubting prosecutions, rehashing evidence and asking a victims’ loved ones to relive their pain day after day is callous and exploitative, millions of television … read more
The cast of Ocean’s Eight is getting along famously.
That being said, some members of the cast are more famous than others. As Mindy Kaling joked on NBC’s Late Night last week, she’s often mistaken for co-star Sandra Bullock’s assistant. And whenever Rihanna is on set, the paparazzi seemingly forget the rest of the cast even exists.
When Sarah Paulson appeared on Late Night Monday, she confirmed Kaling’s story about Rihanna. “If you’re standing next to her and paparazzi are taking pictures, it’s … read more
Before we talk about this, can I get your opinion on Sarah Paulson’s hair? (I will be traveling today and will be away for a bit but I will read all your comments!) I am considering doing a dramatic asymmetric cut like this with two tone color. Evan Rachel Wood has this same cut and it is giving me such 90s nostalgia, I love it. I very much realize that it’s a reactionary cut, like when you get a dark pixie cut after a bad breakup, but it’s also bold an dlovely. I want to wait until the summer … read more
Jimmy Kimmel revealed how much he’s getting paid to host the 2017 Academy Awards. During his visit to KROQ’s The Kevin & Bean Show, Kimmel disclosed that he will receive $15,000 to emcee the 89th Academy Awards. Kimmel acknowledged that his stipend is pretty low considering the scale of the event and offered a hypothesis as to why he’s getting paid at all. “I think it’s illegal to pay nothing,” he joked.
The hosts asked Kimmel if his pay is similar to those of previous hosts like … read more
Mindy Kaling feels slightly less A-list among her Ocean’s Eight costars. The actress opened up about her experience filming the all-female spinoff of Ocean’s Eleven during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday, December 14. The Mindy Project star, 37, is currently filming the movie alongside Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson and comedian Awkwafina. “With that group of women, I’ve never felt so unfamous in my … read more
It’s hard to shine bright on a set full of stars.
Perhaps no one understands that better than Mindy Kaling, who’s currently filming Warner Bros.’ Ocean’s Eight in New York City alongside Awkwafina, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and Rihanna. As Seth Meyers noted on Late Night Wednesday, the film has “one of the most incredible casts ever put together.”
Since principal photography began in late October, the paparazzi have been a constant presence … read more

We didn’t see this year coming, but we heard it from all sides. In Signal & Noise 2016, you’ll find the way we made sense out of all of that sound.
It’s been a privilege and a thrill to cover TV as a critic in 2016. It’s been a terrible and terrifying year in many respects, culminating with the still-unbelievable election of Donald Trump in November. But television also gave me so much to hope for as the medium continues to find new ways to move and grow and comfort and excite. There … read more

I’m splitting up the Golden Globe nominations for film and television. This is the television-nomination post. Considering we’re living in the golden age of television, there was an embarrassment of riches for this year’s potential nominees, which means some hard choices had to be made and there are some significant snubs and WTFs in the TV categories.
