Michelle Williams covers the January issue of Elle Magazine, just proving to me that she’s really going to do a big Oscar campaign this season. Michelle has a supporting role in Manchester by the Sea, and many believe she’s one of the leading contenders for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, alongside Naomie Harris (for Moonlight) and Viola Davis (for Fences). I keep hoping that Viola’s Oscar won’t be snatched away by another actress, and I’m really hoping that Michelle isn’t … read more

Here are some photos from last night’s London premiere of Collateral Beauty, a film which is pretty much dead on arrival in theaters. I’ve barely written about the film or the promotional tour, but Will Smith has been hustling for it for weeks. It’s just that no one has been paying attention. No one even cares that Will has an awful mustache these days! Look at thing. Before I get into the terrible reviews, let me make a few fashion notes and superficial observations. One, Keira Knightley … read more

On Monday, Moonlight was nominated for Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the 2017 Golden Globes, and Harris also received a Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture nomination. It’s one of those years where there should not be too many surprises when it comes to the major Oscar contenders. There are some real races going on, for sure, but as far as the nominations go, the actual races solidified pretty early on, with a few exceptions. For example, while I think Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali is the leading contender for Best Supporting Actor, the other nominations are largely up in the air. Anyway, the SAG nominations were just released and most of these nominations were … read more

Now that we’ve had some time to process the Golden Globe nominations – go here for the film nominations and here for the TV nominations – it’s time to analyze the snubs. Before we get started, let me just say that I’m pretty happy with the nominations from a diversity standpoint: Moonlight was recognized, and Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris was recognized individually. I’m very pleased with Loving’s nominations too, although I think it will be an uphill battle for Ruth Negga to win … read more

“AAAAGGGGHHHH!”
That was Meryl Streep’s reaction after learning she had earned her 30th Golden Globe Award nomination. Behind closed doors, that’s how we assume most of this year’s nominees felt when they learned they had been granted a Golden Globe nod, many for the first time in their brief or lengthy careers. Meanwhile, as the names streamed in, there was cause for celebration on a broader front. After the #OscarsSoWhite controversy of 2016, it seems Hollywood is steadily understanding how to … read more

Shortly after Barry Jenkins awoke on Monday, he learned that “Moonlight” scored six Golden Globe nominations, more than any other movie except “La La Land,” which earned seven. After also nabbing a handful of critics’ prizes over the past few weeks, “Moonlight” has paved a clear path to the Oscars. “I’d be a pretty miserable person if I couldn’t celebrate this morning,” Jenkins told The Huffington Post by phone, a couple of hours after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s … read more

The Critics Choice Awards helped solidify some of the acting races. While everyone has said that the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is Viola Davis’s to lose, I still had my doubts that the big award shows would recognize her work in Fences. But last night she picked up the supporting actress award, the sole Critics Choice Award for Fences (you can see the full list of winners here). So… yeah, I do think Viola will end up beating out actresses like Nicole Kidman and Michelle Williams and Naomie … read more
