Sam Smith has paid Tom Petty songwriting royalties for Smith’s song “Stay With Me,” due to its resemblance to Petty’s 1989 hit, “I Won’t Back Down.” The two performers reached an out-of-court settlement last October, and Smith paid Petty 12.5% of the song’s profits and gave him a writing credit.
