I watch a lot of movies. Some of them are great. Many of them are bad. But every time the theater goes dark, I get excited. You never know when you’ll spot a breakout star, even when the movie around them is a black hole. In 2016, there was a fantastic new face every month — technically, more often than that if you’ll forgive me for including a dog. Here are the 13 new (or, at least, newly valued) talents that made even the worst films worthwhile. I can’t wait to see what they do in 2017. … read more

It’s one of those years where there should not be too many surprises when it comes to the major Oscar contenders. There are some real races going on, for sure, but as far as the nominations go, the actual races solidified pretty early on, with a few exceptions. For example, while I think Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali is the leading contender for Best Supporting Actor, the other nominations are largely up in the air. Anyway, the SAG nominations were just released and most of these nominations were … read more

This gentleman ^ is Mahershala Ali. He has a small but vital role in Moonlight, which I just saw over the weekend. I sort of lost count of how many times I cried during Moonlight, but I know the first time I cried was when Mahershala’s character, a drug dealer named Juan, takes the young Chiron swimming in the ocean for the first time, and Juan tells Chiron a story about Cuba. Throughout the film, there are incredible, stand-out performances – especially the trifecta performances of Alex R. … read more

The Critics Choice Awards are, I believe, somewhere between the People’s Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. While everything is basically a popularity contest, it’s a matter of degrees and the Critics Choice – formerly the Broadcast Film Critics Awards – are basically “consensus popularity” choices. They’ve even broadened their categories so that they nominate even more movie stars. So… yeah, it is what it is. The Critics Choice Awards nominations came out this morning, and I’m … read more

Moreso than the Gotham Awards (which went down Monday night), the National Board of Review Awards are truly an awards-season/Oscar harbinger. While the NBRs aren’t necessarily famous for picking the winners straight down the line, they often help solidify the field and they influence which films and which actors are seen as the “frontrunners” in various categories. This year’s NBRs are interesting because Manchester by the Sea has officially pulled ahead as the frontrunner for Best Picture. … read more

Casey Affleck is a rare animal. For a decade, Hollywood’s ecosystem has favored actors buff enough to star in one action franchise per year. To compete, Affleck’s brother, Ben, and best bud, Matt Damon, have pumped up like gorillas to play Batman and Jason Bourne, respectively. These steroidal alphas still consider themselves serious actors, but the side effect is that they seem increasingly ridiculous in serious roles. It’s getting harder to look at Damon’s six-pack — or at Mark Wahlberg or Chris … read more
