The Death Star blew up before I was born. Its pink-and-yellow cloud left a residue on the culture. We’ve inherited Luke Skywalker’s PTSD. Generations have witnessed that moment through rewinds and re-releases, and once mine grew old enough, we recreated it for ourselves with The Force Awakens’ supersize revamp and now Rogue One’s through-the-looking-glass reimagining of how it was done in the first place. Four decades after the damned thing first exploded, to see the killer ship’s blueprint onscreen … read more
Going rogue? A daily occurrence for the cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. E News’ Erin Lim chatted with the stars of the highly-anticipated space flick at its world premiere in Los Angeles over the weekend, and as it turns out, they’re a pretty bold bunch! Felicity Jones, who plays outlaw Jyn Erso in the standalone prequel to the original Star Wars, told us she once had a wild side: “When did I go rogue? Probably when I was growing up and I was a teenager. At times I was a bit of a rebellious … read more
The first “Star Wars” prequels were not the movies you were looking for. Of course, one blemish stands out from the others — mostly because it just didn’t shut up. Jar Jar Binks has been panned throughout the galaxy since his first appearance in “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.” J.J. Abrams even joked about possibly having Jar Jar’s bones show up in the new movies as an Easter egg. At least that would bring our intergalactic nightmare to an end, right? Well, sorry, everyone. … read more
Diego Luna got the wakeup call of a lifetime in early 2015.
It was then that Luna—known for Y Tu Mamá También, Milk and Elysium—heard he would be playing the Rebel Alliance intelligence officer Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
“It was 2 a.m. in the morning. I was asleep in Budapest—I was shooting a different project—and my phone started ringing. I was like, ‘Oh, God. Who is this? Probably a drunk cousin that wants to tell me something.’ I fell asleep again and I didn’t answer,” … read more
The true monsters of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are, of course, the leaders of the Empire. But when the film hits theaters this month, you can also keep an eye out for some artistic monsters hiding in the background.
Rogue One director Gareth Edwards recently stopped by The Star Wars Show to hype up the film (as if it needed any more hype; this is Star Wars after all). He revealed that, during a scene in the cave home of Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), there are a couple Easter Eggs that tie into … read more
Lady Problems is a weekly column that looks at how the entertainment industry — and its corresponding culture and constituents — is treating women in a given week. (Hint: It will almost always be “poorly.”) Every Thursday we’ll review the week’s most significant woman-centric conflicts, then provide a brilliant solution to each problem that nobody in Hollywood will ever listen to or enforce.
The Lady Problem: In a long piece in the Daily Beast this week, Amy Zimmerman explores the “dark … read more

I always think of Disney productions as indefatigable and overwhelmingly competent, but I need to check my expectations, as should we all. On the heels of the messiness surrounding the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, we’re getting lots of stories about the disappointments around Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Back in May, we heard that the first cut of the film was pretty bad, and that Disney ordered four weeks of reshoots to deal with the blandness. The story at the time was that some at … read more
